685 Third Avenue

Formerly:Winstar Building
685 Third Avenue, New York, New York, Midtown 10017 United StatesPrint this page   •   Share this page   •   Map This

This building is an interesting juxtaposition of old and new. The original building is a quiet grid of glass and stone. But then there's this glossy black parasite attached to it. The addition was put on in 1974, and deliberately clashes with the original building. The contrast between the two forms makes the new glass appear even slicker, more fluid, than it would on its own. And to further defy the original, it has many setbacks, slinking away from the viewer, while the main structure stands strong.

Quick Facts
Notes
    >May, 2003 - Drug company Pfizer pays US$400,000,000.00 for the building which will be renovated. At the time it was estimated to have a $1,000,000,000.00 impact on the local economy because it would bring 4,300 jobs to Manhattan over the next 15 years at a time when companies were fleeing the area in the wake of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Your Thoughts

There is one comment.

This is an unusual building. The orignal part is ugly ewhile the new part has some interest.
